Evicted: Poverty and Profit in The American City

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, written by Matthew Desmond, John L. Loeb Associate Professor of Social Sciences at Harvard University, chronicles the stories of 8 different families as they navigate the trappings of poverty in the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee. Evictions, once a rare occurrence even in the most impoverished areas of the country, have now become a common practice amongst landlords. Low income families are paying more then 50% of their total income on housing alone, leaving very little left over to pay for any unexpected bills or expenses. In Eviction, Desmond relates a "ground-level view" of the challenges of life of the poorest Americans and providing new insights on how communities can fight against cycles of poverty.
