Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore (2018) has been chosen as the 2023 summer reading book by the General Education Committee. According to the New York Times, the book "captures nature with precise words that almost amount to poetry; the book is further enriched with illuminating detail from the lives of those people inhabiting today’s coasts."
Students are encouraged to read Rising in preparation for the fall semester 2023. Elizabeth Rush is the author of Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore, which was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 and a 2018 winner of the the National Outdoor Book Award. A Chicago Tribune Top Ten Book Of 2018 and a Guardian, Publishers Weekly, Lit Hub, and Library Journal Best Book Of 2018.

The summer reading book is chosen each year by the General Education Committee, and read by all incoming first-year students and seniors as part of their Human Experience and Imagining Justice coursework.
