5 Questions with Elan Sandler, Evening & Weekend Reference Librarian

by Nancy Schuler on 2022-10-11T10:18:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

Elan SandlerElan Sandler is another recent (and welcome!) addition to the Library team and brings his expertise and experience from his work in the Masters of Science in Information program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and his work at the St. Petersburg College, Gibbs Campus Library.

What do you do in your free time?

I spend most of my “free time” in class or working on assignments for my MSIS. I have one year left in my program so I like to think that I’m in the home stretch! When I’m not working on school assignments, I like to walk my dogs, visit family, try new restaurants, and take trips up to Busch Gardens Tampa.

What accomplishment, either professional or personal, are you most proud of?

I am most proud of completing and defending my undergraduate thesis. The process of writing and defending my thesis was definitely the most challenging academic experience I have ever undertaken. I don’t think I could’ve completed my thesis without the help of my school’s librarians so never hesitate to stop in and ask us some questions!

What famous person would you like to meet (past or present)?

If I could meet any famous person it would almost certainly be Paul Robeson. I don't know that I can think of a better example of a “renaissance man” than Paul Robeson himself. Robeson was an activist, actor, academic, and so much more. I have been learning about Paul Robeson since I was in high school and I still learn something new every time I read about his extraordinary life!

What are your current obsessions?

I am currently obsessed with a few different hobbies. The quarantine period of Covid really changed a lot about how I spend my time. I got really into using my InstaPot and I have developed a bit of a soup-making obsession. I have also recently leaned into nostalgia for my entertainment so I’ve started watching a lot of the stuff that I used to enjoy as a kid like hockey, football, the Real Housewives of New Jersey, and though I hesitate to admit it, even a little bit of professional wrestling!

What was your first job?

Growing up, my dad was a veterinarian in North Florida. My first job was around middle-school age and I would spend my weekends and summers cleaning out cages. It was certainly not the most glamorous of jobs but I was happy to spend my time hanging out with cats and dogs (even though I was mostly just scrubbing up their messes).
