5 Questions with Stacey Brown, Outreach & Instruction Librarian and NAS Liaison

by Nancy Schuler on 2022-10-11T13:35:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

Meet another new addition to the library team, Stacey Brown, who started with the Library over the summer. Stacey brings her expertise and experience from her work at Colorado Mesa University where she was an instruction and research librarian and liaison to biology. She’s excited to join Eckerd as the Instruction & Outreach Librarian

What was the best vacation you ever took and why?
The best vacation is always the last one I took. We recently went to Croatia and explored walled cities, kayaked on the Adriatic Sea, took a speed boat to the Blue Cave and Hvar, and ate a ton of gelato!

What’s your favorite quote from a TV show/movie/book?
With great power comes great responsibility.
This quote can be traced back to the first century BC and has been connected with many political leaders, the French writer Voltaire, and Marvel Comics –powerful stuff for just six words. As a journalist, I also like to remind myself of the power of words – spoken, print and online.

What’s something an outsider wouldn’t know about your industry?
I think librarians and libraries are often pushing against stereotypes – that we read a lot (we all do on an academic campus), that we like quiet (sometimes, but I’ve met a lot of  loud librarians), that we shush people (ummm, no. just no.). Librarians can work in academic, public, special, private libraries.

How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do now?
My 10-year-old banana-seat- riding-cyclist-self  would love what I do! She wanted to be a teacher (which I did), but she also wanted to keep learning, and that is really what a librarian should constantly be doing: learning about new ideas, historical context, people and their research interests, and the science of the world around us. She also wanted to keep riding her bike to school, and I still do that too!

What are your current obsessions?
Food is always an obsession – currently loving breakfast sandwiches – O’Dough’s Gluten Free Everything Bagel (toasted), turkey, spicy Laughing Cow cheese, red bell pepper, over easy egg. Good and messy every morning! Oh, always ice cream – love Small Batch and Paciugo Gelato (ok, gelato, but still)
