Scholarships and Fellowships

The Truman Scholarship

Amount: $30,000

Deadline: 11:59 pm in your time zone, on the first Tuesday in February.

The Truman scholarship is a premier scholarship offered to graduate students who are interested in public service. So, if you are studying international relations and government, you are eligible to apply.

Applicants should have an extensive record of campus and community service. They should have a steadfast commitment to a career in government and international affairs. For this specific scholarship, good grades are NOT the most important aspect that the selection committee looks at. A commitment to a career in public service and a proven record of community service are the most important criteria.

HORIZONS Scholarship

Amount: Varies

Deadline: On Hold. Check Back Next Year

The HORIZONS Scholarship is one scholarship that is for international studies and related majors, but it is only open to women. Created by Women in Defense in 1988, the scholarship is for those who plan to pursue careers in national security and defense.

An annual award, you must be a United States citizen and currently enrolled in a university or college, full time or part-time. Graduates and undergraduates are both welcome to apply, but you must be at least a junior if you are going for your Bachelor’s. In addition to your career goals and major, you must demonstrate a financial need and have a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Your application should include your work experience, your objectives, recommendations, demonstrated financial need, academic achievements, your activities in defense and national security, and an essay. The reward amount for the HORIZONS Scholarship varies from year to year.

Jim & Anna Hyonjoo Lint Scholarship

Amount: $1,500

Deadline: July 31

Another award you may want to go after is the Jim & Anna Hyonjoo Lint Scholarship, which awards $1,500. Presented by the Lint Center for National Security Studies, the scholarship honors students seeking degrees in international affairs, counterintelligence, and national security.

To apply for this scholarship, you have to submit a 600-800 word original essay on the importance of these subjects. You will also have to be pursuing a career in this industry.

Applicants should note that even if they do not win the Jim & Anna Hyonjoo Lint Scholarship, their applications will automatically be entered for the Virginia & Frank Misselhorn Memorial Scholarship, which awards $500.

World Trade Week College/University Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: May 5, 2022

Also open to international studies majors is the World Trade Week College/University Scholarship. Awarding $1,000, it’s dedicated to students who are pursuing a career in international trade.

In order to qualify for this award, you must be a graduating high school senior located in California. Your GPA must be 3.0 or higher. While your major doesn’t technically have to be international studies, your career choice and end goals should be related to international trade and business. You will also be asked to complete an application and submit either a one-page essay or a 2-minute video on your goals along with recommendations and transcripts.

In addition to the World Trade Week scholarship, your application will also be entered to win the Global Trade Scholar Award which grants $500.

The African Politics Conference Group promotes recognition within professional associations of the theoretical and methodological contributions to the discipline by political scientists whose research and professional interests center largely or in part upon sub-Saharan Africa.

American Association for the Advancement of Science

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association. In addition to organizing membership activities. AAAS publishes the journal Science, as well as many scientific newsletters, books and reports, and spearheads programs that raise the bar of understanding for science worldwide.

American Political Science Association

The American Political Science Association (APSA), founded in 1903, is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 11,000 members in more than 100 countries. With a range of programs and services for individuals, departments, and institutions, APSA brings together political scientists from all fields of inquiry, regions, and occupational endeavors within and outside academe to deepen our understanding of politics, democracy, and citizenship throughout the world. American Society of International Law

The mission of the American Society of International Law is to foster the study of international law and to promote the establishment and maintenance of international relations on the basis of law and justice. ASIL is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational membership organization founded in 1906 and chartered by Congress in 1950. ASIL holds Category II Consultative Status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is a constituent society of the American Council of Learned Societies. The Society is headquartered at Tillar House in Washington, D.C.

Association for Canadian Studies in the United States

The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) is a multi-disciplinary membership based organization committed to raising awareness and understanding of Canada and the Canada-U.S. bilateral relationship. ACSUS supports research and academic activity through its publications, conferences, and grant programs. ACSUS is the largest organization of Canadian studies specialists in the world, and works as a liaison with regional Canadian studies associations as well as the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS). ACSUS publishes the refereed journal, American Review of Canadian Studies.

Association For Israel Studies/Israeli Studies Association

The Association for Israel Studies is an international scholarly society devoted to the academic and professional study of Israel. The Association's membership is composed of scholars from all disciplines in the social sciences and many in the humanities.

Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (originally American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) but changed their name in 2010 to ASEEES), a nonprofit, non-political, scholarly society, is the leading private organization in the world dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about the former Soviet Union (including Eurasia) and Eastern and Central Europe. The AAASS supports teaching, research, and publication relating to the peoples and territories within this area.

Association of Chinese Political Studies

ISA welcomes the Association of Chinese Political Studies (ACPS) as affiliated cooperating organization. Association of Chinese Political Studies (ACPS), formerly Chinese Scholars of Political Science and International Studies, is a non-profit, non-political organization for scholarly and professional activities. ACPS was founded in 1986 in the United States to promote academic exchange among Chinese scholars and American scholars of China studies. In 1995, the organization changed its name to Association of Chinese Political Studies, and since then the organization is for all who study Chinese politics. Currently the organization has over 400 members from various parts of the world. Eighty percent of them are male and 20% of them are female. ACPS publishes scholarly books, newsletters, and a refereed academic journal -- Journal of Chinese Political Science.

Association of Korean Political Studies

The Association of Korean Political Studies (AKPS) is a non-political and non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of scholarly exchange and academic inquiries among political scientists. The AKPS supports scholarly efforts that explore politics of Korea and international relations in the region. It is the largest organization of Korean political studies in North America.

Austrian Institute for International Affairs

The Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip) is an independent research institute based in Vienna / Austria. The institute is positioned at the juncture between academic and policy-oriented research. Besides academic research and publishing, the institute's activities entail the facilitation of exchange, connecting international organizations and stakeholders, teaching and policy consultancy.

Brazilian International Relations Association

The Brazilian International Relations Association (ABRI) was established on September 30th, 2005 during the National Seminar on The Study of International Relations in Brazil held in Belo Horizonte (MG). ABRI is a product of the cooperation effort of the main university and research institutions which have structured programs dedicated to provide graduate degrees and research activities in the field of International Relations. The establishment of ABRI is a true landmark in the process of consolidating International Relations as a distinct academic area in Brazil, a long sought objective among students and researchers in our country.

Brazilian Political Science Association

The Brazilian Political Science Association (ABCP) is a scientific association, which gathers professionals and graduate students in the field. It aims at promoting the exchange of ideas, the debate of problems, a high level of professional ethics, and the defense of shared interests in the field of Political Science.

British International Studies Association

The British International Studies Association promotes and develops International Studies in the United Kingdom and beyond. It is committed to furthering research, knowledge exchange, professional development, and learning and teaching. It connects people and fosters collaborations both inside and outside the academic community in order to increase research impact.

Canadian Political Science Association/Association canadienne de science politique

The Canadian Political Science Association began its activities in 1912 and was incorporated under the Canada Corporation Act in 1971 and was granted its articles of continuance in 2014 (under the Not-for-profit Corporations Act). The main purpose of the Canadian Political Science Association is to facilitate and promote the study of politics and government in Canada. Through varied activities, it seeks to connect students, researchers, journalists, practitioners, teachers and all individuals interested in the discipline to one another and to international resources for the study of politics and government.

Center for Social Studies/Peace Studies Group of the University of Coimbra

The Centre for Social Studies (CES), founded in 1978, is a research institution in the area of the social sciences affiliated with the School of Economics of the University of Coimbra. It is directed by Professor Boaventura de Sousa Santos and has 80 researchers, as well as 19 associate researchers and 40 junior researchers. Several of its researchers are full-time researchers. All other researchers combine work at CES with teaching (mainly at the School of Economics and at the Faculty of Arts) or with other professional activities. The research team includes sociologists, economists, legal scholars, anthropologists, educators, literary and cultural studies scholars, architects, geographers, historians, and medical doctors.

Central and East European International Studies Association

The Central and East European International Studies Association (CEEISA) was founded in February 1996 by the members of the International Affairs Network and by the Department of International Relations at St. Petersburg State University. The Association is envisioned to be the region's premier professional organization with a membership open to anyone interested in international relations (broadly defined). The Association is committed to consolidating the discipline of International Studies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) at the highest possible standards.

Danish Association of Political Science

Danish Political Science Association was founded in 1960 and is a focal point for the study of politics in Denmark. Similar companies exist in most countries, and these are united in International Political Science Association ( IPSA ), and there is a Nordic political science association, Nordic Confederation of Political Science (Nordic Political Science Association, NOPSA ), the company in both cases is part of. Moreover, there organizations like European Consortium for Political Research ( ECPR ) and the European Conference of Political Science Association ( ECPSA ) the company follows the work in. The main tasks of the Danish company's pursuit of Danish interests in relation to international organizations, as well as holding of annual meetings. In addition, the company collaborates also with the new Political Science Graduate School.

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) is an independent, scholarly association, which supports and encourages the training, research and cross-national cooperation of political scientists in institutions throughout Europe and beyond.

European International Studies Association

The European International Studies Association (EISA) is a new individual membership based association, serving the International Relations community in Europe and beyond. EISA has been created by the Standing Group on International Relations. Activities will include a broad range of events, ranging from large scale biennial Pan-European Conferences to the European Workshops in International Studies (EWIS), PhD summer schools, Exploratory Symposia (ES) and Young Researchers’ Workshops (YRW), the latter organized back-to-back of the Pan-European conferences.

European Union Studies Association

The European Union Studies Association (EUSA) is the premier scholarly and professional association, worldwide, focusing on the European Union, the ongoing integration process, and transatlantic relations. EUSA now has 600 members throughout North America, all EU member states, and on all continents, representing the social sciences, the humanities, business and law practitioners, news media, and governments on both sides of the Atlantic. We welcome as members all those interested in any aspect of European integration, European Union affairs, and the transatlantic relationship.

The Foreign Policy Association (FPA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring the American public to learn more about the world. Founded in 1918, FPA provides independent publications, programs and forums to increase public awareness of, and foster popular participation in, matters relating to those policy issues.

German Political Science Association The German Association for Political Science (DVPW), founded on 10 February 1951, includes currently more than 1,700 members. GRENPEC (The Global Research Network on Peaceful Change)

GRENPEC (The Global Research Network on Peaceful Change) is a newly established research network organized by a group of leading scholars and prominent institutions worldwide, focusing on the study of peaceful change at the international, regional, and domestic levels. International Association for Political Science Students

The International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) is a democratic student government representing students in political science and related fields around the world. IAPSS strives to deliver sustainable academic contributions to augment the education experience of its members, foster exchange, and promote social and scientific responsibility. IAPSS offers a multiplicity of events, publications, professionalization and career services, as well as advocates for students in political science and related fields at the international level.

International Political Science Association (IPSA)

The International Political Science Association (IPSA), founded under the auspices of UNESCO in 1949, is an international scholarly association. Its objectives are to promote the advancement of political science through the collaboration of scholars in different parts of the world. It has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and with UNESCO.

International Relations Council of Turkey

The International Relations Council of Turkey (Uluslararasi Iliskiler Konseyi Dernegi-UIK) is a non-profit association of scholars, diplomats, and policy practioners specialized in International Relations. IRCT’s general mission is to create a network of International Relations scholars, diplomats and policy practioners as well as to conduct joint projects, meetings, conferences and educational programs in order to enhance academic and policy understanding of International Relations issues. IRCT has been successful in creating awareness among the wider public about its projects and the issues they address. In its projects, IRCT has worked in partnership with public institutions (i.e. Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), various universities, research centers (i.e. The Centre for Black Sea and Central Asia, EU Research Centre, Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey) and NGO’s (i.e. The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges) in Turkey as well as research institutions in Europe (i.e. CEPS and ICBSS) and NATO. The Japan Association of International Relations promotes academic activities, including research, presentation and dissemination, in the fields of international relations, the history of international relations, area studies and other related fields, and seeks to promote friendship and cooperation among researchers in these fields.

Jawaharlal Nehru University, School of International Studies

Established in 1955, the School of International Studies is the oldest school of the University. During the forty-six years of its existence, the School has established itself as one of the premier institutions in the country for the study of international relations and area studies. The School has made pioneering contributions in promoting the study of international relations as an academic discipline in India and in advancing knowledge and understanding of international affairs in an inter-disciplinary perspective. The School is also the first institution in the country to promote “Area Studies” and to develop expertise on various counties and regions of the world. It has also acquired an international reputation as a center of advanced learning.

Korea Economic Institute of America

The Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI) was established in 1982 as a not-for-profit educational organization to promote dialogue and understanding between the United States and Korea. As a leading policy outreach and educational organization, KEI focuses on promoting economic, political, and security relations between the U.S. and South Korea. Located in Washington, DC, KEI aims to broaden and deepen understanding among American policy leaders, opinion-makers, and the public about developments in Korea and the value of the U.S.-Korea relationship. Through its publications, outreach programs, social media outlets, podcasts, blog, and website, KEI provides access to in-depth and current analyses about the two Koreas.

Korean International Studies Association

The Korean International Studies Association (KISA) was founded in 2009 as a scholarly and professional organization devoted to the study of international affairs in Korea through the English language medium. KISA provides a support structure for accumulation and distribution of knowledge on International Studies in Korea, related to the Korean Peninsula and/or to its operating environment. KISA brings together scholars and students of international studies as well as practitioners in the field of international affairs through research collaboration, presentations at the annual congress (usually held in October or November) and in other affiliated workshops. KISA also supports the diffusion of knowledge through publication in two endorsed journals: The Scopus-listed Asian International Studies Review published by Ewha Womans University Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) in association with Brill publishers, and the graduate student focused Yonsei Journal of International Studies. KISA conference panels have been published in book form by Brill and Palgrave Macmillan. KISA has close working relationships with other international organizations such as the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA), and the Korea Foundation. Nordic International Studies Association

The Nordic International Studies Association (NISA) was founded in October 1 991 to promote research, adv anced study and contact among academics and practitioners in the field of international studies in the Nordic countries. The Association encourages the adv ancement of knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, analy tical approaches, institutions and nations. NISA facilitates contacts with international studies research communities outside the Nordic area. Towards these ends, NISA has taken responsibility for the premier scholarly journal in the field: Cooperation and Conflict, published by SAGE Publications. NISA arranges Nordic conferences of international studies and graduate student training workshops. Peace Science Society (International)

The Peace Science Society (International), or PSS(I), is an association for the advancement of peace and conflict research. The Society operates as an objective, professional, and scholarly organization without political, ideological, financial, or national bias. PSS(I) is not confined to a particular academic discipline, but welcomes and utilizes relevant work across the social and natural sciences. Moreover, the Society is committed to promoting work which utilizes rigorous scientific methods and analyses on the causes of conflict and the promotion of peace. PSS(I) facilitates acquaintance and provides a vehicle for discussion among its members worldwide. It encourages and supports the publication of research, particularly, but not exclusively, quantitative research. PSS(I) does not promote direct political action or polemical discussion.

Phi Beta Delta Honor Society

The Phi Beta Delta Honor Society honors those who serve internationalism - the idea of a world connected, of respect for different traditions, of the need for education to enhance knowledge of the many cultures that are part of a globe that we all must share.

Philippine International Studies Organization

The Philippine International Studies Organization (PhISO) was established to promote IR as a field of study while fostering an interdisciplinary exchange of research and knowledge through workshops, conferences, and collaborative publication projects to further understanding about the concept of the ‘international.’ Besides providing a venue for the discussion of dominant approaches to IR, PHISO seeks to develop interest and scholarship in the plurality and decoloniality of IR through the study of theories, praxes, scholars, and sources of knowledge stemming from the Global South, particularly the Philippines.

Policy Studies Organization

The Policy Studies Organization includes more than 800 universities and institutions in its membership as well as individuals in more than 80 countries. From its headquarters in an historic house near Dupont Circle in Washington, once the home of the families of President James Garfield and the labor leader Samuel Gompers, the society organizes conferences, seminars, the publication of journals and books, and an increasing Internet presence.

Polish International Studies Association

The Polish International Studies Association (PISA) / Polskie Towarzystwo Studiów Międzynarodowych (PTSM) has been established by the country’s international relations research community to foster scholarship and teaching, and to develop cooperation with IR scholars across the world. PISA proudly continues the rich century-long tradition of IR research in Poland marked, inter alia, by active participation of Polish scholars in the International Studies Conference (1928-1950). PISA’s main ambition is to strengthen the methodological integrity of IR as a discipline within social sciences. It also strives for better integration of the Polish IR community from various colleges throughout the country. A strong sense of epistemological identity among Polish IR scholars is a precondition for the progress of research in this discipline of social sciences in Poland. The association was established 2009, and as of 2018 gathers over 500 members. PISA has 9 local departments in major academic centres of Poland as well as several thematic research subsections. Since 2011 PISA organizes annual conventions (working languages: Polish & English) and numerous conferences and seminars.

The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) is a global think tank and professional graduate school of international affairs at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. South African Association of Political Studies

The South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS) came into life in May 2001, as the result of the merger of the South African Political Studies Association (SAPSA) and the South African Chapter of the African Association of Political Science (AAPS-SA). The Association is the official body of the disciplines of Political Science and International Relations in South Africa.

Stanley Foundation's World Press Review

The Stanley Foundation's World Press Review is a nonpartisan magazine whose mission is to foster the international exchange of perspectives and information. It contains articles reprinted from the press outside the United States, as well as originally written material. Our goal is to foster a globally engaged citizenry, which acts not only in its own country's interest, but also in the interests of the world community. The Stanley Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, private operating foundation  focused on promoting and building support for principled multilateralism in addressing international issues.

Support for Improvement in Governance and Management in Central and Eastern European Countries

Support for Improvement in Governance and Management in Central and Eastern European Countries (SIGMA) is a joint initiative of the OECD and the European Union. The initiative advises transition countries on improving public governance at the central government level. SIGMA comprises two expert teams that provide individually tailored services to 15 countries. One team counsels the ten European Union candidate countries of Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on financial control, external audit and the civil service, and complementing the EU's twinning programme. The other team works with countries in the Western Balkans to strengthen public institutions, giving particular emphasis to budget, treasury and taxes; financial control and external audit; and civil service and administrative reform.

Taiwan International Studies Association

Founded in May 2004, TISA is a premier scholarly and professional organization, focusing on the study of the international studies. TISA brings together scholars from wide range disciplines and field of inquiry, and the main task is the study of various countries, promotion of international research and publications, and provide scholarly exchange and discussion within the nation and among the world.

Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research

The Toda Institute is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization committed to the pursuit of peace with peaceful means and a complete abolition of war. In cooperation with other peace organizations that resist injustice and resolve conflict, the Institute aims at maximizing the efforts of people of peace of all colors and creeds everywhere. In helping to promote peace initiatives at national, regional, and international levels, the Institute encourages and proposes concrete strategies that can be translated into action. For the next few years, The Institute will focus on an international dialogue on four major themes: (1) Human Security and Global Governance, (2) Human Rights and Global Ethics, (3) Social Justice and Global Economy, and (4) Cultural Identity and Global Citizenship.

Turkish International Studies Association

The Turkish International Studies Association, a North America based organization, is a network of scholars working on Turkey . TISA brings together international relations and political science scholars from all specialties and regions within the academe in order to expand awareness and understanding of international politics. To this end TISA will be cooperating with the International Studies Association (ISA).

University Association for Contemporary European Studies

The University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) is a professional association whose membership is comprised of academics, practitioners from the UK, Europe and across the globe. The largest proportion of membership is academics from UK and Europe. UACES provides an independent forum for informed debate and discussion of European affairs. It is directly involved in promoting research and teaching in European Studies as well as bringing together academics with practitioners active in European affairs. Since 1969, UACES has become the largest European Studies association, with members across Europe and further afield. Urban Affairs Association

The Urban Affairs Association (UAA) is the international professional organization for urban scholars, researchers, and public service professionals. The Urban Affairs Association is dedicated to creating interdisciplinary spaces for engaging in intellectual and practical discussions about urban life. Through theoretical, empirical, and action-oriented research, the UAA fosters diverse activities to understand and shape a more just and equitable urban world. (Adopted March 12, 2010) UAA is the successor organization to the Council of University Institutes for Urban Affairs, formed in Boston in 1969 by a group of directors of university urban programs. As urban affairs developed as a professional and academic field, the need for an organization that welcomed urban faculty, professionals, and students as well as urban program directors and deans became increasingly apparent. In recognition of this need, in 1981 the organization’s name was changed to the Urban Affairs Association. Today, UAA includes over 600 institutional, individual, and student members from colleges and universities throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Among its other activities, UAA sponsors the Journal of Urban Affairs, a refereed annual journal, publishing manuscripts related to urban research and policy analysis of interest to both scholars and practitioners. All UAA members receive the Journal of Urban Affairs as part of their membership fee. The Urban Affairs Association holds a conference each spring in an urban center. These yearly conferences are an integral part of UAA’s efforts to increase knowledge about urban places and promote the development of research activities. They provide an excellent opportunity for members to exchange ideas, information, and experiences. The conference program features both topics of institutional concern and those related to urban issues. Although formal papers are presented, with selected papers published, the conference format also allows opportunities for informal activities designed to foster professional networking and open discussion.

Women In International Security

Women In International Security (WIIS) is a non-profit, non-partisan membership organization dedicated to increasing the influence of women in foreign and defense affairs by raising their numbers and visibility, while enhancing dialogue on international security issues. WIIS offers a comprehensive set of programs designed to foster and promote women in all fields related to international security, and in a variety of sectors.

World International Studies Committee

The World International Studies Committee (WISC) is a network of different national and international professional associations dealing with international relations and related disciplines. For the next three years the organizing tasks of the WISC will be conducted from the University of Ljubljana, its Faculty of Social Sciences. WISC is comprised of 20 international, regional and national international studies associations or sections of political studies associations, including the following: the Brazilian Political Science Association, British International Studies Association (BISA), Central and East European International Studies Association (CEEISA), Chinese Association of Political Science (Taipei), Croatian Association for International Studies, European Consortium for Political Research – Standing Group for International Relations (ECPR – SGIR), French Political Science Association – International Studies Section (AFSP – SEI), German Association of Political Science – International Relations Section, Hong Kong Political Science Association, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, International Studies Association (ISA), Israeli Association of International Studies (IAIS), Japanese Association of International Relations (JAIR), Korean Association of International Studies (KAIS), Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Mexican International Studies Association (MISA), Nordic International Studies Association (NISA), Portuguese Association of the History of International Relations (APHRI), Russian International Studies Association (RISA), Turkish Political Science Association.
